How to safely remove old photos from Magnetic Albums to preserve them

The old Magnetic Albums contain a harmful glue as well as a PVC plastic cover.  The PVC gasses alone will deteriorate photographs as will the glue that held the pictures to the page.  If the pictures have been in these albums for a number of years, getting them out can be a problem.  After removing the plastic page cover, use dental floss to slip under one corner and begin removing the picture from the album.  Be patient and work slowly, moving the dental floss back and forth between the photo and the page to loosen from the page.

Now you can scan the photo to stop any further deterioration and repair any damage to the color while it was stored in the Magnetic Album.  Then finally store the photo on acid free buffered pages and cover with PVC free page covers.  If you don’t know where to find acid free buffered scrapbook pages or PVC free page covers, I recommend looking at this site for a great solution.  Remember in the future to always store all photos on acid free buffered paper with PVC free page covers.

  2. thank you for that tips! but Today without printing, we can take huge numbers of pictures and share them with just about anyone at no cost. Just don’t forget that, with the cut in photography development cost, be sure to invest something so that you keep those precious memories for the next generation.

This is true and somewhat disappointing. I viewed my daughter’s recent pictures of her four daughters who are in Alaska and their great accomplishments in band, gym, and girl scouts. Then it dawned on me that if it weren’t for FaceBook, my daughter would not have shared her photos and videos with so many and for free as you state. But, when they no longer show on FaceBook or any other online viewing tool, where do those wonderful photos go?

We must preserve the memories in a very keepsake way. When those little girls grow up to be Mommy’s themselves, how will they show their children the wonderful things they did as children? These are questions we all must think about. Find the best way to keep your pictures and stories in a safe way that will last generations. Web sites come and go. Photos don’t stay on the web sites forever. That is where software like StoryBooks from Creative Memories comes in handy. There are several ways to print and preserve those digital images and give them to your children to keep forever. Lots of companies make digital books you can print. The best I have found is Creative memories StoryBook.

I have even printed StoryBook pages from digital photos and mementos and placed them in traditional scrapbooks. Quick, simple, and easy to make for multiple grandkids. They will have those memories with Mom’s or Grammy’s words with the photo. Wonderful way to help them remember the good times.
